Conceived in the late nineteen-sixties, the C 111 was first used to develop the new Wankel engine concept. Felix Wankel's radical rotary engine was seen as a potential successor to the piston engine and Mercedes, along with General Motors, Peugeot, Mazda and NSU, worked hard to solve inherent problems with rotor sealing and poor fuel consumption
The first C111, built in 1969, was fitted with a four-rotor Wankel engine producing 280 BHP and reached a top speed of around 160 mph thanks to the wind-cheating shape and a Cd approaching 0.35. Tested at Untertürkheim, Hockenheimring and the Nürburgring in April and May 1969, the car featured new anti-squat and anti-dive suspension technology which soon found its way into production cars. The front axle design went into production and the independent rear suspension developed for the C111 formed the basis of Mercedes' enduring multi-link system
Some five months later the C111-II had a more powerful 350 BHP engine and improved aerodynamics (Cd: 0.325) giving it a top speed of over 185 mph and a remarkable 0-62 time of just 4.8 seconds. These early cars were shown to journalists and engineers to demonstrate Mercedes' grasp of technology and they set a standard of comfort and speed that Mercedes aimed to offer in all its sports cars
Shown to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970, the C111 became accepted as a spiritual successor to the 300SL Gullwing Coupe but increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the fuel crisis of 1973 conspired to sideline the Wankel as a production engine. Poor fuel consumption, then as now, proved too great a hurdle for most manufacturers to consider Wankel-engined cars for production. Notable exceptions were NSU and - later - Mazda who continued rotary engine production into the nineties
In response to the need for more economical engines, Mercedes turned to diesel power and started a program of development on the five-cylinder engine from the 300D saloon. Armed with a Garret turbocharger and an intercooler, the 80 bhp naturally aspirated engine's 80 hp mushroomed to 190 bhp and the C 111-II became a diesel-engined record-breaking car. The first runs took place on June 12th 1976 on the brand-new test track in Nardo, Italy.
